Hey! Welcome, it’s nice having you here.
This article is to help you build healthy habits that can help you overcome or deal with Anxiety.
Anxiety is not a mental illness. It’s a feeling many of us get; of nervousness and unease about something with an uncertain outcome. Though at certain levels it’s completely normal to experience, there is however a problem when that is all you feel not only at a heightened level, usually accompanied by a series of uncomfortable physical symptoms but even in situations that do not warrant such a response.
Then it’s safe to conclude that’s not normal, and some help must be sought after.
There are different stages of Anxiety, and multiple reasons someone would feel it’s a major part of their lives. To name a few, some reasons include;
- Childhood Trauma
- Stress due to an illness
- Personality
- Drugs or alcohol
The list goes on…Sometimes it’s hard to pin-point what the exact cause could be, and so this article will help to either alleviate those symptoms or overcome Anxiety as a whole.
It’s also important to note that, overcoming Anxiety is a gradual process. Depending on each individual it can also be slow. So remember not to feel pressured to seeing results a couple of days and even weeks later.
1/Turning Off your Phone
Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but the damage control that comes with turning off your phone even for a few seconds is astronomical. When using our phones; which we do constantly, we are bombarded with the rush of life that is constantly pushed to us via multiple social media outlets.
Either someone trying to sell us a product, or someone trying to show off their lifestyle. It becomes a burden, and we don’t even realize it.
Turning off your phone will not only give you a peace of mind, but allow you to live in the moment. It helps you realize that real life is not about what is hand-picked and shown to you in the name of content, but about living, learning to adapt, acquiring new skills and enjoying your time spent with others.
2/ Focusing on what you enjoy doing
Unfortunately, life is not a bed of roses. There will be moments when you laugh till your stomach hurts and others when all you feel like doing is crying. It is important to hang on to those moments we enjoyed the most, so we can constantly keep reminding ourselves that there is joy in living. For this reason, finding a hobby or skill you enjoy doing is very crucial, because it continuously subconsciously allows you to deal with the daily demons that come with being alive.
Bringing me to the third point.
3/Constantly Praying
In your heart, in your head, with your mouth. Prayer is extremely powerful. I would argue it is the most effective way to overcome not just Anxiety but depression and other forms of life stressors. You may not feel a difference, but trust and believe, when you pray, you put your complete trust in God which then allows him to work behind the scenes in your life. Bit by bit, you will begin to see the fruits.
4/Facing your fears
You will always be scared of public speaking if you don’t try to overcome it. You will always be scared of heights if you don’t challenge yourself to get on that roller coaster, or zip-line. And those are really Fun experiences you’re missing out on. To Overcome Anxiety is to also learn how to overcome your fears, whatever it is that is causing you to be Anxious. Remember, most times; whatever we are afraid of, we’re not afraid of because it might harm us, we’re afraid of it because we just simply…are.
5/Training your mind to not have unrealistic expectations
Sometimes we expect way too much out of situations we shouldn’t. And even worse from people. Unrealistic expectations don’t always have to mean expecting too much, sometimes it could also be expecting too little. The key word is (Unrealistic). It’s important that we try to as much as we can to align our expectations with Logic, possibility and realism; so whenever something unexpected happens it can at least be backed up with reasoning and an explanation; not just a mare “Oh, I expect too much” because that on its own can worsen our view of reality, in turn worsening Anxiety.
Having realistic expectations helps curb down the Anxiety we may feel especially before certain awaited reactions, or situations.
